Columnist Bob Herbert of The New York Times will be awarded an honorary doctorate June 14, and he will give the commencement speech to graduating seniors. President Jill Beck knows Herbert through his wife Deborah Bial, the founder and head of the 28-university Posse program, and asked Herbert to speak.
A new scholarship, made possible by a generous $1 million donation by Robert and Bonnie Buchanan, who both graduated from Lawrence in 1962, will add nearly $50,000 to Lawrence's financial aid pool. In 2010, the new Bonnie Glidden and Robert C. Buchanan Scholarship will provide four scholarships of $12,500 each.
Several members of the Lawrence faculty and staff have gathered together to ensure that the Teakwood Room of Downer Commons is not lost when the building is closed next year. The group is attempting to preserve the room, which is a rarity based on its history and its nature as an intact work of art.
For the past week, Lawrence students and faculty have been forced to grow accustomed to sharing the campus with thousands of insects. The insects swarm in thick clouds, forcing people to cover their faces when walking outside. Some unlucky students, like sophomores Jismy Raju and Jennifer Compton, even experienced an insect invasion of sorts when dozens of tiny bugs crept through the holes in their window screen.
