"Where in Wisconsin is Jessica Doyle?" is a geography game Wisconsin's First Lady Jessica Doyle has on her website to teach kids about cities in Wisconsin. Last week, the answer to that question was Appleton. Doyle, an avid education advocate, dropped by Edison Elementary School to observe two Lawrence volunteer outreach programs, LARY Buddies and ArtsBridge.
Imagine being beaten 10 times with a baseball bat by your spouse, having your wrists, ankles and face duct-taped, and then being stuffed into a trashcan and driven in the back of a pick-up truck to a freezing-cold storage unit where you are left to die. This is what Teri Jendusa-Nicolai endured.
Think of home. It's something different for everybody. For some, home may be a parent's house; for others, a dorm or apartment. Some people own a house, while others consider a friend's couch to be home. Home is a place where you belong. It is a place where you can go to rest, and a place that can shelter you from the dangers of the outside world.
At 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, Lawrence students and members of the Appleton community gathered to take part in the CROP Walk. Each year, Lawrence students involved in CROP (Communities Respond to Overcome Poverty) organize the walk for the Appleton community.
